I received a Darkglass M900 about a month ago and out the box it sounded a tad funky but I had a tour coming up and it seemed to be working alright. I normally run 2 Ampeg 810e cabs but depending on size of venue I tend to run 1 a lot of the times lately. I have a Ampeg 210 at home and the head sounded a little farty and muddy but I figured an 810e at a louder volume tweaked a bit in the eq would help. My 810s live in a trailer or rehearsal space so I didn’t have a chance to really reference. First two nights I ran the head into just 1 810 at 4ohms and while it worked and had volume it still sounded weird and like it didn’t have much thick low end or any substantial feeling to the tone. I had nothing dimed on the head and most of the knobs I’d say were around the Noon or even 10 o’clock range. 3-4 nights into the tour I finally had a big enough stage to run both cabs so I wired up and sound checked and the head kept cutting in and out. “Clicking” sound would engage and disengage sound. The head never turned off but it sounded like it did. Every 10 seconds it’d cut out then come back. The back of the head was on 2 ohms. Speakons connecting both cabs. I’ve never had any problem doing 2 ohms with these cabs with other heads (peavey mesa orange Ampeg). I feel like maybe I had a defective head but when I contacted the darkglass tech he said to much 80hz can throw the head out of 2ohms? I have the bass knob pretty low, passive pickups, settings low with no additional gain or boost pedals. They didn’t seem to want to exchange sense the tech didn’t respond to any following emails. Has anyone else had a m900 do similar things? I was able to try another m900 (a friends) and it sounded much different. I wasn’t able to see if it’d do 2ohms but it worked better then mine for sure. If I hear nothing from Darkglass soon I may sell the head for a Mesa Subway that can do 2 ohms. I was also curious if maybe I unhooked an 810 speaker I could change the ohms a bit and maybe the m900 would work better? I’m kinda lost at this point and went back to my old Peavey head and boxed the darkglass. Any and all help is welcome. This is my first post on talk bass btw hah.
FYI, If you need more than one cable, something is wrong with your cab. It's not unusual for the switching jacks to go bad.
