Dean Edge 09 upgrades?

(If this is the wrong place to post, move it) What are some good upgrades for a Dean Edge 09?

I was thinking about putting in EMG pickups. If I add an EMG pickup, active or passive, do I need a preamp? Currently my dean comes with one pickup, a volume and tone knob.
Should I add another pickup to it or keep one?

This would be my first time doing this though. Should I do it myself or leave it to someone who knows how to do properly?

As for pickups I like Nordstrand. I don't know the size of that particular pickup but chances are they have one that fits. If you're not confident swapping them out a skilled tech can do that job in about 10 minutes.

I know active emg pickups have a preamp inside the pickup itself but should I add an onboard preamp also? Or is it pointless?

This has been discussed quite a bit at Dean Club!!!

Please visit and go back a few pages once you get there.

I've decided to have a go at this.
I recently bought this for $99

and this
40 HZ (the 35 HZ is too short to fit in the same opening even though it is for 5 string)

I'm still waiting on the pup from EMG

Right now I am staying passive with just vol/ton controls

But, EMG has this
btc-control.jpg

called the BTC control

EMG Pickups / BTC Control / Bass EQ Active / For Bass / Accessories / Electric Guitar Pickups, Bass Guitar Pickups, Acoustic Guitar Pickups

It allows you to keep only 2 controls while at the same time providing you with a active treble and bass stacked pot. You won't need to route a separate battery compartment as this will allow you to place the battery under the control plate as it does not take up a lot of room.

Great way to keep your mod reversible and no white knuckle sweat your brow away wood work!

So you’re saying the smaller, 4 string pickup is too small?

Yep....it's too short. If you buy it your going to have big gaps at either end.
The existing pup is 4 inches and the 4 string 35HZ pup for 4 strings is 3.5 inches long.

The 40HZ is the way to go. I've also searched high and low for a 4 corners screw location pup with no luck.

Rolo has done the same mod (just the EMG 40HZ pup) to his Edge 09 with great results.

I've had this bass for about a month, and while I can't comment on how those pickups sound, the bass is pretty light and very comfortable to play. I switched out my tuning pegs because the stock ones sucked but I haven't had problems with any of the other parts.

I own three of these and haven’t had any problems (yet) with my tuners. What was the problem? Any pix?

They didn't break or anything, but the tuners on mine were rough when turning them, which made it hard to tune up. The E string also sounded like it was going to break the tuner every time I tuned it.

I bought mine used, so maybe there was damage from the previous user?
The tuners I got were used, off a ESP LTD bass (from ebay).

On my Dean Edge 09 the pick up measures 3.5 inches wide, I ordered a 35hz an it almost fits the slot but it has maybe and 1/8 on both sides and hits the rounded corners of the slot. I'm curious how people are dropping the 40hz in.
