DI only vs DI+cab sim

Hey gang!

I might start playing with this band that use IEMs instead of cabs. Guitars are on HX stomps to DI to a Beringer x32 mixer.

I'm more old school and have never played this setup. During first practice I used the DI of my mesa subway D800 into the mixer.

If I join these guys i think it would be easier to get something like a VT21, Ampeg SCR-21 or Ampeg SGT-SI. I think they will all be great options (mostly play punk).

Do I need an impulse response? I know the SGT DI has cab sim but is also substantially more expensive. Just trying to thing what the proper setup for this band should be. Appreciated!

I would suggest listening to them before assuming you need a cab sim, especially live.

There's enough eq on the X-32 that if you know what you are doing you should be able to get awfully close to what you need without a cab sim.

Do you play with distortion? There are plenty of good reasons to play through a cab sim, but that’s really the only reason you’d really need one. If you play clean, I’d consider just running straight from your D800’s DI to start and worry about cab sims later.
If you do play with dirt, you could still get by with LPF probably.

I have a basstortion pedal and i use slight overdrive. Nothing too crazy.
