DIY bass kits with upgraded pickups

Anyone had much experience using these kits with basic components and then just upgrading the pickups? Maybe additionally down the line a better bridge, tuners or even neck etc.

I have absolutely 0 experience in building basses or building anything for that matter, but like the idea of a completely customisable bass which I can make my own way.

My idea is for a 5 string jazz and then throwing in some Duncan's and probably at least a better bridge sooner or later. Is the idea comparable to buying a squier and modding that?

Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Not all kits are equal but if you have the skills, yes, you can make it better than any squier especially since you plan it upgrade electronics. You want a jazz, which is relatively normal but the cool things about kits that you can get unusual designs like the Ric above.

Cheaper than modding a squier? Depends on on how much the kit costs, how many tools you already own, and how cheap you can get a squier. If you have zero tools, you might spend more since you need to do your own sanding, wiring, finishing, etc whereas the squier will come to you playable. I look at this way: go for the kit if you want the experience. Mod something if you want it quick.
