Does anyone know what bass model this is? Custom maybe?

Been getting into my banjo studies but found this video when just looking at more bluegrass type of banjo playing. Thought this bass was cool, a hybrid bass guitar with some EUB type of standing? Does anyone know, custom maybe I'm guessing?

Thank you in advance for answers, have a great day and holidays!!!

It's got a very interesting voice and looks good too.

I'd still have to suggest the NS Design NXT4a if you're looking for something this "upright bass" in an electric. It's got a very good Pizzicato sound (without all the upkeep costs and environmental worries of a traditional upright) and the arco setting played Pizzicato has a top notch fretless bass sound as well as a great bowed sound. More sound options. I've seen them used in great shape for around the 1,300.00 range too. My 2 cents. Take it for what it's worth.

An extremely interesting hybrid. Arched fingerboard radius to bow it. One of the few (if not the only one) where they utterly mimic'd viol construction: Arched spruce top, maple back, sides, and neck, ebony fingerboard. A wonder it doesn't have a soundpost under the bridge.

I tried one once, it's almost student cello sized and a little ungainly on a strap, but the radio-antenna-telescoping peg does bring it right up for vertical playing. One of those occasional 'all out' builds, where Takamine, almost like Honda's motorcycle guys, builds something really special just to see if they can lure somebody else into trying to make something as good.

It's definitely got the tone, though I'm sure to do it really right would require its own dedicated amp. Not cheap, but there's nothing cheap about it. One of these with the Thomastik ABG strings would kill, if you didn't need to bow it.

I can't help you because I've never really been much of a fan of country music (except for Johnny Cash, Brantley Gilbert, Garth Brooks and Faith Hill) or bluegrass, but I listened to the whole thing and then, your video sent me down a Youtube hole.

I may not be a huge fan of the genre, but vocally they are a talented group of young people.

In particular, based upon a singing voice, that fiddler could read the phone book to me and I'd be entertained.

Hey I honestly agree. I am actually not that into bluegrass either, I mostly play banjo because of folk music or Appalachian folk/pre civil war/Work music which IMO is way better and more real to the roots of history. But there are some great bluegrass numbers and not to mention older bluegrass is great. I honestly only watched that video since the bass look cool when looking into more banjo folk! XD

It looks cool but sounds like a bass guitar.

A couple grand will get you a serviceable Kay in a lot of markets. Not as portable, but will play and sound like an upright (because it is an upright).
Noted — ain't nothing like the real thing. BUT on the opposite end of the spectrum, amplified Kala UBass sure comes close IME.
