I recently rented a DB and have had a first lesson. Absolutely love it (I've played EB for 25 years). To broaden my knowledge, would really appreciate any recommendations for bass teaching books, and importantly some of the best DB players to listen to/watch. Thank you!

You would get a lot more response on the double bass side. But for bassists to watch/listen, tough to beat Ron Carter.

I would suggest sticking with a good teacher. Teaching yourself electric is one thing; teaching yourself upright is another. For bassists to listen to, Ray Brown and Ron Carter are definite musts. Other greats include Paul Chambers, Israel Crosby, Cachao, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden, Oscar Pettiford, Jimmy Blanton, Charles Mingus, Milt Hinton, Christian McBride, Scott LaFaro - the list goes on.

yep: lots to listen to for inspiration! also: listening to those cats will inform your BG playing. (and check out some eddie gomez!)

good luck on your DB quest!

What sort of music? If you've played electric for that many years, technique and the size jump will be the biggest hurdles for you so a few lessons would be a good idea

Thanks very much for the really helpful replies and names :) I'm definitely sticking with the teacher - just wanted to get as much of a broad base of listening material as possible from people with different tastes and opinions.
Thanks again!
