Double Bass Teachers, Austin TX

I am fairly new to the Austin area, and I'm looking for the best Double Bass teacher I can find, for upright technique, mostly focused on Jazz styles.

I have 30+ years experience on electric bass, studied upright in college but stopped playing it after school. Looking to study, on a rental, and buy something as soon as I know what I want.

Bad News: I'm starting over, technique wise, on upright.
Good News: I am a schooled musician with good ears, and a lot of professional experience.

I think it's all about acquiring proper technique that provides the straightest line to catching up with my head and ears.

Sorry to chime in ahead of Lynn, but i cut my teeth in Austin. John Fremgen at UT and Utah Hamrick would be my first teo choices. I studied with John and he is a great guy, player, and teacher. Utah is the jazz bass teacher at Texas State in San Marcos, but lives in Austin. He’s great. Pat Harris is a solid guy, but I don’t know if he teaches. Also, look up Ryan Gould or Josh Hoag and check out the monthly Bass Hang. Very supportive group!

Thank you. I called John yesterday, but haven't heard back. Heard him playing with Kurk Covington at Elephant Room. I will check into Utah, I live south of Austin. What is the Bass Hang? Is that the same as the Bass Workshop? Any other suggestions for meeting players? Thanks again.

Yep. Bass hang and workshop are the same. Heald monthly. The gang at Austin Violins knows where it is. They have a facebook group. You can look me up there and I’ll introduce youz

An absolutely great player I would look up is Ingebrigt Flaaten, a norwegian player I believe has relocated to Austin. Not sure if he is still there, but worth a try.
He is extremely busy touring, but try to get a few lessons from him if possible.
