I am looking for a little input for dialing in my Dusty Hill tone via a Tech 21 SH-1 flyrig.

Currently, I am running with something that looks a little like this

Highs -8 oclock
Lows - 1
Mid2 @500 Hz - 2
Mid1 @ 200 Hz - 4
Gain - 1

Blend is almost 100% and Bite is on.

I play with the front pick up of a J, tone up about 1/3, sometimes with a pick (if I am on vocals), but mostly with my fingers. I am just trying to work with what I have on hand.

Curious about thoughts on basic EQ settings for this tone, whether or not you are familiar with the Sh-1 flyrig.

I also have a YYZ shapeshifter, if you happen to be familiar with that and prefer to go Dusty Hill that route. But again, I think I am looking for a basic EQ set up to ball park things with.

Thanks in advance,

E

If you haven't seen this episode of Rig Rundown, give it a view. It's what Dusty was running before he passed away. He was one of several guys that inspired me to pick up the bass at 15 and I was fortunate to pick up one of 50 of his signature basses. With all the tech out there today, you can recreate his tone in various ways, but you also have to sift through the years as to what you want. It's always the gritty early stuff for an old man like me. I've got the YYZ module, but it's just dialed in to Rush so I'm no help with that...

Those are sweet telebasses. Congratulations!

I would like to have a tele in my efforts to come as close to his sound as possible, with a 1.5 inch nut. Something about the standard P-bass neck that my wrist does not like. But that appears to be a tall/expensive order.

Agreed on the gritty early stuff. The tones I want are the tones off albums from the first half of the 1970s.

I do "Going Down to Mexico" and "Just Got Paid with the SH-1 set as described above, starting to play with feeding the YYZ into for a little grit. Might be able to do it with the YYZ alone. I don't know. I am pretty new at this stuff and mostly just using my ears to get something "dirty blues" in the mix.

Nice to meet another admirer of Dusty Hill. I grew up in Texas, the influence of early ZZ Top on me is hard to overstate. As of this last November, I have found myself in a blues band. I am sure you can guess the rest.
