Dying gear, sick as a dog, we did the gig anyway. Not a good plan...

We had a gig Saturday night at a friends place, just a neighborhood block party kind of thing. All sorts of stuff just, well went bad on us...

To start off, it might be easier to tell you what went right, vs what went wrong...
For starters, the Rumble 500 V3 combo + 210 stack, Zoom B3, and SX Ursa 1 worked flawlessly.
My rhythm guitarists SX Hawk + my Behringer GTX-60 combo he seems to perpetually borrow, flawless.
Mics, mixer, powered speakers, again, flawless.
We even had a drummer this time, and his drum set did what it was supposed to do no problems.
Lighting was actually the high point of our evening. We just kind of set them daisy chained and in an auto rotating pattern and let it go. Worked great!
Mixer, my cheap Harbinger powered mains, borrowed Behringer powered subs, mics, etc... all worked great.

I've been fighting some sort of bug now for better part of a week. With the heat, humidity, and the smells of the party that usually wouldn't bug me, but for some reason the smell of beer and BBQ was just too much, I had to step behind the makeshift stage (Flat bed trailer) and amp stack to barf in the trash can, 3 times...

The lead guitarists Crate combo amp popped a fuse early in the first set, we scrambled and put him out of his zoom pedal straight to the board and out the PA. We lost a LOT of his sound that way.

The drummer fell off the stage when he kicked, and realized the stool was a bit too close to the edge. He just sort of tilted back and kept going. Good thing we were on the lawn! To top it off, he barely missed the trash can I was barfing in...

I had 1 song that I needed the B string of my 5 to play, and sadly, mid song the G string popped. I was able to transpose for the most part, but it was distracting, and made one heck of a sound out of the amp.

The friend who had us play the gig talked to me about it afterwards, I apologized. He said "no problem, everyone had fun and enjoyed the show!". So I guess no harm no foul...

We have some serious work to do before our next gig...

#1. Lead guitarist needs to get that amp in and fixed, replaced, or he needs to figure out how to get his sound out of the mains. He was looking into it this week.

#2. I need to re string the 5 string. I was still using the OE strings and I should know better...

#3. The drummer, assuming he decides to play with us again, this was a one gig thing for now, and we are going to talk with him later, I think so, but we need to make sure he gets a bit more forward room on the stage, or somehow figure out how to NOT fall over backwards. And no he was not drinking. At least at that point of the night. He had 2 beers, one between sets, and one after the second set.

#4. I need to get my a$$ in to see a Dr. whatever this dang bug is, is driving me nuts. Something has been making the rounds at my office and it just won't seem to go away...

At least it's a good story :)

I once played an outdoor show where they could not keep the power to the stage. It kept cutting in and out every 10-15 seconds and would come back 5-10 seconds later. Thankfully we were all on back line gear so no gear worries. I was actually really proud of that show. We played our whole set anyway and every time the power rebooted everyone was locked in. Sounded like a giant skipping record (if skips were actually dead air) We sure were polished. I miss those guys.

Hope you get to feeling better soon! Worst ever experience for me was playing with pneumonia. Ugh... :rollno:

Not sure what it is. Feels like the flu, but it's September... No chills thank God, but everything else... Like I said, it's been making the rounds at my office. Damn cubicles...

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles. No pictures either? What a lousy gig. ;)

Feel better soon!

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

The only pic I have of the night is of me heaving my guts up into a trash can. Not exactly something I want to post

The problem is, I am the one typically with a camera out snapping pics!

We've all had shows like that. I had one this weekend where the club was having all sorts of power issues. We would get halfway trough 1 song and a breaker would pop. We would have to stop and wait for them to reset everything. Kind of annoying. So we ended up turning it into a drinking game with the crowd. Every Time we popped a fuse, you had to do a shot. We had quite a few people in on the game and by the end of the night, made the bar alot of money despite only playing for about half the time we were supposed to play. The bar manager actually complimented us on how we handled it, as most bands would have probably thrown a hissy fit over the poopy power. We ended up getting booked by the owner of the club for a private party.

Moral of the story: Always find a way to turn lemons into lemonaide at a gig. You never now who is watching.

Love it. When it rains it pours. It's usually only you (or me) that gets all wound up. Most people don't even notice or care. Love the part about the drummer falling off almost into the can your beefing into. At our Sunday service, we have a heavy wood sign we hang up, dead center of everything. Every drummer we have ever had had clocked himself more than one time. Some almost going coo-coo on us. Every visiting player bends over to do something and comes up with a knot. I make sure I tell every one of them about it but it still happens and every one has said afterwards...you said not to do that.

Only tangentially related, but a few years back wife and I both had some kind of ongoing stomach thing. After a few weeks of feeling just kind of sick without full-on puking, I decided the answer was absinthe after doing some reading on the stuff. So I picked some up, she and I would both do a shot of it (for about 3 days straight) and sure enough we started to feel better. Maybe you ought to try absinthe? Or maybe the cure is worse than the disease in that case? The latter would have been my wife's vote.

Is your band called "Murphy's Law", by chance? I would consider changing that.

Oddly enough, it's TOFB (Texas Old Farts Band). Go figure...

Youngest guy is 42 right now.

It's been a bit of a challenge. I've seen worse. Specifically I was at one show with a friends band when a breaker panel caught on fire.

I've been to other gigs where the singer (urinated) off audience members bad enough to cause a massive bar fight.

Ours was simply a lesson learned.

Multiple issues yes, but nothing show stopping. Just got us out of our groove for a few minutes.
