Are there any preferences? I saw recently one advertised as "Double Bass Endpin Rubber Tip w/ Bottom Grip to Prevent Sliding" - sounds a bit of a gimmick to me, but, hey, you never know, right?

Regards to all

The super endpin ball that Gollihur sells is great. I had one on my old bass.

But be aware that the maximum pin size it will fit is 10mm (around 3/8"). I've tried to convince them to make a larger one, but so far, no dice.

Good warning... I had to toss one of those to another player because it was too small to fit on my pin.
Yes, the limit is 10mm. In Europe also known as the Wolf Super Endpin.

But mine got some rubber off due to the rough street surface.
Since I dislike to take it off and replace it with a normal rubber foot, I might buy another one and use the new one indoors and the old one when I'm outside. Unfortunately they don't sell replacement rubber balls without the metal mounting part, so you have to buy the whole thing again when the rubber gets hard after many years or if the rubber was scrape off the ball due to hard scratching on the streets (maybe it happened by turning the bass in place on mine).

Yes. I've used the Wolf end pins since they first came out. About 9 bucks at the time. I've never quite understood why they rarely slip. The contact point where they touch the floor is really small. One brand seems to be as good as another. I did have problems with the three lock screws stripping, however. The ball I use now simply screws into the steel rod.

Because the contact area is small and the rubber is rather soft there is a high pressure on the contact area per area unit. This together with the good grip of the rubber works very well even with an angled bass hold.
BTW, I corrected the European name of the Wolf to what I found in ads, I couldn't remember it exactly before.

If you move about while playing (you know, nothing extreme, just a bit of gentle swaying side to side) does the ball "walk" across the floor? That's the problem I have with crutch tips and similar things.

The ball stays where it is, just naturally rolling a few millimeters.
I have damaged my ball by putting it to the ground on streets, so there are several degrees of softness when rolling the ball. But even with that I didn't have had a problem yet. Just make sure the floor is dry, since you might get a big slipping problem on a polished wet ground.
