Hi, Lynn. I just posted a thread in the DB forum... Thought you might be able to help directly.
I'm a new DB student (at 62!); just ordered a new Engelhardt C1 from Buitar Center. Price and 0% financing for 36 mos. made it irresistible. It's out of stock through and I'm having second thoughts. Can't find much info on how they're being delivered these days (re: strings, bridge, endpin etc.) and am concerned that quality may be erratic. Do you have any experience with these? Also, the bass will "live" in our great room and though color should be the least important thing about the bass, it would be nice to know what color it will actually be! The pix at Guitar Center show an almost orange mid-tone but other pics of C1s show dark mahogany with light maple fingerboard. I tried calling Engelhardt-link and the bass/cello store associated with it and the phone is "temporarily disconnected." Any thoughts you can share on these basses or the manufacturer? Engelhardt basses that I have seen are plywood. They have been around a long time. A few of my students have used them. Some are blond and some are brown. Guitar stores are wonderful places to buy electric basses and amps but have a very limited number of choices for upright basses. Upright basses are such a specialized item, it can be a challenge to find and buy one depending on where you live. If there is a string luthier/dealer you can visit, that is recommended.

Engelhardt is a continuation of Kay, they bought the rights, tooling and parts in 1969. They are basically Kay. Had a M series and loved it.

You can expect - in order to make the instrument playable and worthy of play - to pay for a setup and strings (no information given regarding what strings these ship with, which implies cheap). Perhaps also an adjustable bridge as part of setup.

I have to say that a phone being "temporarily disconnected" is not a good sign.
