Fake Fender? Real Fender? Ideas?

Two things I noticed right off, the bridge has five screws but two are at the front corners and three are at the bend. Fender doesn't do them that way. Also Mexican Fenders, outside of the recent reissue things, standards have the truss rod adjustment at the headstock, not at the base of the neck. They are not good photos but the color looks strange.

I'd be cautious.

I'm not too worried about it being a fake. I can obviously talk him down with the price. He says the pickup isn't working so I'll ask him to shave off a few bucks off the price too.

I mean if you go into it with the idea that it is a copy and price it accordingly, I don't see anything wrong with that. Assuming there's are no major problems with the truss rod or neck.

I think if you like the feel of the neck and can stand the color of the body then it's ok. I'd be looking for a lower price as I'd be replacing pickups and electronics, bridge and pickguard at a minimum, and the tuning keys would be on a short leash.

Probably. I'll see if I can talk him down more.

The tuning posts seem to have a dome-shaped top. Is this right for a Fender bass?

Mexican Fender tuners have those. They're actually better than the vintage ones, IMO. They hold the strings tighter than the ones on vintage reissues.

Frankly, @MovingPitchers, knowing your requirements, what good do you expect from this distress bass?

I'm expecting nothing out of this bass except for a platform to experiment on. The body colour isn't that bad....can't even describe what it is but it looks aight to me.

I have an extra set of MIM pickups I'll put in there and a BAII that I can put on the bass.

I'd use the fact that the bass has electronic problems in that negotiation. Say nothing that would indicate that you have the skills to address the problems yourself (whether you do or don't) as this might undermine your leverage. It's none of the sellers business what you do with the bass after you buy it. It's just the present condition of the bass that counts.

I just said I have an extra set of pickups I can put in the bass. Didn't specify whether it'd be me or someone else doing the work but I've seen a friend of mine turn a POS Squier into something wonderful. I bet I can too.

He was asking 300 for the bass. He said he could go down to $250. That's still too much; I honestly would pay maximum 200...

In all honesty, I don't really care about it being fake or not.

I have my dream bass right now so anything else I may end up getting will always be second-class to my number one.

It'd be nice to have a third bass that's a beater bass but I know maintaining two basses in top condition is work enough!
