I'm considering getting a Vintage 60s Jazz Bass as a replacement for my Sandberg TT4 and the Original series with the Pure Vintage 64 pickups has by far the best tone in my opinion: punchy low mids and a bit of bark when digging in. The Original series have been discontinued I guess, although some Sunburst Originals are still for sale here and there.
The new American Vintage II JB has a great looking fretboard and matching headstock in my taste. It has Pure Vintage 66 pickups. Checking out the demos, it seems that tone is less punchy in the low mids, a bit towards the 70s sound.
What are the specs and tone differences between these two pickups? Are the '64 "pre CBS" actually different from the '66?
