Anyone know what the basic differences are between the "Longhorn" and an American Standard (other than shape)?

I had a longhorn Jazz Bass back when they were out. Weren't they THE American Standard at the time? It was a short time for sure, but I remember that the only way to get a non-longhorn Fender bass was to get a Japanese, or vintage reissue model.
