Considerably louder (+3-5dB), but not twice as loud (+10dB). Psycho-acoustically the Rumble 100 will seem twice as loud due to the larger woofer moving more air at the very same SPL, and will also exhibit broader & smoother dispersion of the all important midrange.
The 40 watt will sound fine at home but you can gig with the Rumble 100v3. I occasionally run sound for a Seattle 5 piece band and their bass player uses a Rumble 100 on a stand. Even though he is run direct, I sometimes have to back him completely out of my mix because of the stage volume that thing puts out.

If the drummer is playing with brushes and you are not trying to conjure up a large amount of low end, you might be alright. Anything louder than that, no way.
Nope. Even the Rumble 100 would be pushing it a bit. Fender Rumble 200 is plenty and can play your typical 100 seat bar with ease. Anything more than that just use the XLR out to the PA board and you're golden.
It depends on the drummer. You would be ok with a true student of percussion but your average kid will drown you out and deafen you as well.
If you are set to play with others you should look an affordable used setup.
Yes. I use my 100 with a guitar player and drummer in a garage. The guitar player is using a Marshall 50w SS head and a 4x12 Crate cab.
I found the rumble 100 rather boomy while the rest of the range sounded better. Also I don't find the 100 to be all that loud.
You really need the 200 or 500 for playing with a drummer unless also using a pa, which then the 100 is a ok stage monitor for some.

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead and bought the Rumble 100 and it's actually allot louder then I thought. This will be perfect for basement jamming. Sounds great too!
I listened to the Fender 40 and the 100 at the same amp settings, and the same bass guitar. They sounded very similar to me. The 100 had a VERY SLIGHT "bassier" sound on the open E and A strings and at the first fret, but the 40 sounded a bit clearer to me, perhaps because of the 10 inch speaker. The 100 does have an effects loop in and out, but that's not important to me. Since the 40 also has a DI out, they are equal there. Hope this is helpful.
