finish (topcoat) original paintings on bass-shellac content

I use basses as the canvas, or support, for paintings/drawings using shellac, as ground, as ink/paint, and as topcoat. Interested in various experiences of top-coating shellac. Tried multiple shellac layers with thin spray can nitro layers over that-works but not best possible outcome. First try was over Catalpa body, and yes it dents easily, is like a butterfly, or Death's Head Moth, in weight and fragility, but man does it resonate. Finish layer must be compatible with shellac, look good over shellac, look good and not harm the original artwork, protect the artwork, protect the bass, not inhibit resonance, not crack, and otherwise be perfect. Got any good ideas?
