The Shoals
Well, after months (maybe years) of consideration, I finally decided to pull the trigger on assembling a P-style bass with parts and specs that I’ve come to prefer. Have perused the ‘verb, ebay, and TB for a while just eyeballing what comes up, what I like, and what general impressions are of different specs and combinations and ended up going with the following:
  • Warmoth alder body, painted charcoal frost, tort pickguard
  • Warmoth roasted maple next with Indian rosewood fingerboard
  • Neck is ‘standard’ P spec - 1 11/16” width, vintage tall frets, steel support rods, and cream dots
  • Schaller tuners and Gotoh vintage bridge
  • Benson Custom Split Coil pups
  • 920D wiring harness
Didn't take too terribly long and I’m happy to say that I didn’t have to re-drill a single hole!

Happy to answer any questions or field any other feedback - this was a fun project! Whatcha think TB?

You should be proud of that! Now top it off with a custom headstock decal.

Ooh good call! How does one go about making a custom decal?

Wow! That is GORGEOUS!

How does it play and sound? Is it as you were hoping? Even better?!?

So far so good! Neck fitment is better than expected and I’ve been able to dial in a very playable action purely through bridge adjustment. Neck profile reminds me of an AVRI 63 I had for a good while. Had to adjust pickup height a bit, but I’m very taken by these Benson pups. Definitely vintage flavored, but with a bit more overall clarity (less woolly) than many ‘vintage’ voicings I’ve heard.

Looking forward to getting to know this girl over the coming weeks!
