Hi all, just wanted to express my excitement to a group of folks who might understand!
I was trying to figure out when I last seriously gigged as a bass player - just looked up the last recording I made as a "professional bassist" - appearing on Lisa Valentine's album Secret Lover (Spotify) to see how long ago it was since I had that gig, and was shocked to see that it was 2013! It goes by so quickly!
In the meantime, I have transitioned into songwriting, and have sung and played guitar and drums and a few other instruments in small performances over the years. I have continued to record bass, and have played a few one off or supporting shows, but I haven't had a bass "gig" for almost a decade.
This all changes tomorrow: I have my first gig with my new band KM3 (Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me), playing the role of Simon Gallop in a Cure tribute band!
I have never been in a tribute band, or even really a "cover band", although some of the funnest gigs I have played was when my old mostly original jam band started to take wedding gigs and mix it all up. Wedding gigs are amazing - people dance and have fun AND they pay you well? What isn't to like? I remember playing lots of Uptown Funk...
Simon has been a major part of my bassist DNA since I started playing at 15. This is great music to come back to - like James Brown or Bluegrass - it is so solid, foundational, and repetitive; but in that repetition is power, subtle variation, and the feel is supreme. Probably funny references to compare the Cure to, but it's just how I feel man
I have also been learning how to use effects and a pick without making my hand go numb. I'm getting there! Fascination Street can be brutal!
So, tomorrow we have our first show - and in the spirit of the holiday weekend we have another one on Sunday (with a Depeche Mode tribute band! Looking forward to seeing them )
It is exciting to get back into the foundational role - and to do something that is so purely enjoyable! And, you know, it might pay enough to start growing my pedal collection.
