Flats v Rounds v Tapes: With carrots

8:30. The tension is just like... what now?

And yet, he explained it perfectly! :roflmao:

I'm always surprised at how few bassists have ever tried tapewounds. There was a used Jazz on the wall at my GC that had tapes on it (GHS, to be specific. ) Someone asked a staff member what the strings were because he liked them. The guy took a look at it, slapped the E-string a few times and said, "Oh yeah, man Black Beauties. They're extra smooth" :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

I've never tried tape wounds. I thought they were supposed to be more mellow than flats? That's what the little chart on the back of the D'Addario box led me to believe, anyway. But in the video above they sound more lively then the flats. Maybe they need to break in. I'm gonna have to try some tapes now.

I have had a set of D'addario black tapes on my Am Dlx J (active) for a few years. They have a ton of upper mid content and are not dull/mellow at all. No zing, but that's good for me. Lots of thick lows too but not thuddy.
Just put a set on my Dingwall Super J/P and the same applies. I love the feel of them.
I've been using them for about 6 or 7 years on the J.
I wasn't too keen with them on my 60th anniversary P bass though. For passive P bass I still like the TI flats.
