I've mentioned this elsewhere recently, but it's time to start a thread dedicated to the basses made by @GeoffGould!

Geoff and I recently connected, and I've now got a couple of basses on order that should arrive sometime this fall or winter. I'll be slowly growing my inventory over time, hopefully ending up with 6-8 basses in stock by the end of next year.

I'm also able to help with special orders if you've got your own specs in mind. My brand expertise is limited at the moment, but I'm learning all the time. And I'm certainly happy to ask Geoff questions if I don't already know the answer to your question(s).

Here's what I've currently got in the works:

One thing that I want to go out of my way to mention is this: Geoff really looks after his dealer network. It's a small group of stores, and I don't want to come in like a ton of bricks and disrupt what is currently working for all involved. So if you currently have a working relationship with one of his existing dealers, I'd like to encourage you to continue that relationship. That said, please feel free to chime in here in this thread with your thoughts and questions!

Otherwise, if you're "unaffiliated" in that way and curious about Geoff's basses... let me know!

Just curious, are there any G. Gould players in my little corner of talkbass?

If you're unfamiliar, Geoff was a founder of Modulus basses back in the day, and he's still making basses with graphite necks, EMG pickups/EQ, and gorgeous tops and colors.

I've wanted a Modulus bass ever since I first got gobsmacked by Oteil back in the Aquarium Rescue Unit days. These basses should scratch that itch nicely.

Not looking to buy.
But out of curiosity, does the upper horn reach the twelfth fret to cancel neck dive?

Geoff shared some photos of bodies that are in progress and available. I grabbed the Alder body below that has been milled to be a GGi5-S (Standard Series 5-string with 2 x EMG40X pickups). I'm thinking Candy Apple Red?

The Standard Series instruments feature a graphite neck, an alder body, chrome hardware, quick-release 18V battery compartment, EMG BTC active Bass/Treble EQ, and Gotoh Res-O-Lite tuners.

The GGi5-S starts at $3280, and you can get that in black, vintage white, surf green or sonic blue. Trans colors add $50, sunburst and metallic colors add $100, and Candy Apple Red adds $150.

Other available options include:
Low Density Swamp Ash (+$180)
Reclaimed Redwood (+$100)
Torrified (roasted) Eastern Pine (+$75)
Matching Headstock (+$200)

As long as there's no paint on the body below, we can change the specs if you're curious about doing a special order. 20% is all I need upfront, and the bass should be done by the end of the year. Or if you want a different body wood, we could just start a new order from scratch that might be more like February/March delivery. Let me know if you're interested in doing any of that!

Geoff does some cool stuff with his neck pickups. In his 4-string and 6-string basses, the neck pickup is a P configuration inside a soapbar shell. With his 5-strings, though, the neck pickup is a custom soapbar that has one magnet removed to produce a more focused, dynamic sound that is still hum-cancelling (compared to a typical soapbar, that is).

Pretty hip, and I can't wait to hear one of everything!

The Deep Blue Metallic GGi4-S from @GeoffGould has arrived, and it is SWEET! I love the neck profile, it's nice and slender front to back. The action is ridiculous, and the tone is sublime. What's not to love?

I've got a lot going on today, so it'll probably be tomorrow before I post my own photos.

The two G Gould string sets are also now in stock. These are 35" scale with tapered B, E and A strings, and they are what comes standard on Geoff's 5- and 6-string basses.

More thoughts to come soon! And possibly a video, if I can carve out some time this weekend.

This past week got away from me a little bit, and I didn't make a lot of progress taking pictures of things. I'm trying to fix that this weekend starting with these shots of the GGi4-S that arrived recently. This guy is looking for a home, let me know if you're interested!

For people not so eager to google things as me... :smug:

Neck Pickup: EMG 35PX - a soapbar casing holding a what I would call a reverse P - one coil for the E+A strings, one coil for the D+G strings, with the D+G coil being the one nearer the neck - with a built in preamp that "offers increased touch sensitivity and dynamic range". Ceramic magnets.

Bridge Pickup: EMG 35CSX - a soapbar casing holding a humbucker. Again with the built in preamp, and again ceramic magnets.

EMG BTC active Bass/Treble EQ - "Approximately 12db of cut and boost are available for bass and treble and all controls are center-detented". I think there's a blend with center-detent, rather than V/V. And, assuming I've matched up the correct blurb, "2-position dip-switch that controls the slope of the high frequency response. By choosing one of the four combinations the high frequency response can be tailored to your liking."

Presumably one battery compartment is for the pickups, and the other for the preamp?

There is indeed a blend knob with a center detent. However, it works a little different than some folks might expect. Geoff looks at that control as a tone knob, so when you turn it down he wants the tone to get "darker". The neck pickup is the choice for that, so rolling the blend knob back (counter clockwise) lends a bias towards the neck pickup. That's the opposite of how some other folks wire a blend knob. It makes sense, though, and he's been doing it this way since the Modulus days, so that's good enough for me!

it's BTS, not BTC
there are two batteries in series, providing 18V for more headroom. Both pickups and EQ run off of 18V

Ooops - that's my bad! I was showing BTC in my listings, but I've now corrected that. Thanks for the info!

Same circuit, just concentric (BTC) vs. not concentric (BTS)...

Now this is a brand that interests me very much. I’ve owned 3 different Modulus Quantum basses and one Zon Sonus Custom years ago, and always loved the graphite necks.

We might need to discuss an order sometime in the not too distant future.

I'd love to help ya out!

I've got a couple 5-strings on order, and I'm anxiously (but patiently) waiting for them to get built. I'd like to have 6-8 in stock by this time next year, as well as handling special orders for folks as needed.

@GeoffGould sent me some progress pics the other day of two basses I've got on order. Many thanks, Geoff!

Here's the before and after of the body for the Swimming Pool Burst GGi5. A little color lovingly applied goes a long way! I've also got a shot of Candy Apple Red GGi5-S, and I'll get that posted tomorrow.
