Genzler Bass Array or Magellan 112

Which Cab? Bass Array or Magellan 1x12

I once owned the Genz Shuttle Max 6.2 and a Focus 2x10. I sold that rig and regretted it ever since. So, I plan on getting the new Genzler head, but I can decide on which cab to get. Bass Array or Magellan 1x12?

I just play at home, but I still want the tone of the gods!!! I play mostly Rock, Motown and some Metal.

Help me decide.

I had the time to spend some time with both.

The Magellan 112 reminded me a lot of the Bergantino cabinets. It's very full range. It has an adjustable tweeter... I really preferred the sound of this cab.

I plugged the Genzler head into the Bass Array, and it was a lot darker. There is no adjustable tweeter, so it kind of is what it is.

I prefer the flexibility of the Magellan 112.

Could it be something other than the cab in the equation?
According to the specs the 12-3 goes higher.


BA 12-3 = 32-15KHz, 34 lbs, price = $879.00
MG-112T = 36-14KHz, 30 lbs, price = $689.00

I would go for the Magellan as its lighter and cheaper.
The Bass Array is cool too though.

I wish they had a 4 ohm version of the Magellan, it would pair well with my Walkabout.

Same bass, same head... all we did was move the speaker cable from one cab to the other.

The guy at the shop noticed the difference too... he was the one that checked and said there was no horn attenuation on the back of the cab.

OK I have never measured a cab with a tweeter but to me my ears hear a tweeter at well below 25% as flat and anything above that is a fair amount of boost to the high end. That being said I havent heard either cab so could only guess. What mid driver is in the 12-3?

I don't know... didn't spec it... just played it... I was there during lunch so I didn't have a lot of time.

They also had a Bergantino B|Amp... I'm planning to go next week when I ca spend a little more time.

I have the BA12-3 and like it a lot. I find the mids to be very vocal, the bottom end is tight and muscular, and the highs are smooth and never spikey or harsh. The dispersion is excellent. I was looking for something with a tight bottom and those vocal mids (I play fretless exclusively) and got that in spades.

I play in a guitar based pop band, a church band that plays a very wide range of styles, and as a side player with singer/songwriters. My head is a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0. So far, I have not found myself in a situation where the one cab is not enough.

I have not tried the Magellan so I can't speak to it.

Both cab use the same 12" and the box is the same inside. The difference is in the crossovers and the tweeter vs. 4x3" high drivers.

112 is more your traditional woofer+tweeter cab, but the Genzler tweeter (like the GB stuff) isn't the "in your face" piercing horn driver.
12-3 has a (perceived) fuller low end and sweet, even midrange and smooth high ends. I like bright cabinets, but the array isn't dark at all to me. Yes it doesn't have the sparkle of a tweeter equipped cab, but I can slap in it without problems.

I can tell you that one of the benefits of the Bass Array design is the smoothness of response with a variety of playing styles and tone. With the Array design many players have commented that bass tones that utilize a lot of harmonic content or even distortion or fuzz effects have discovered an entirely new complexity in this type of cabinet. The paper cone drivers handle the distortion with more smoothness, detail and clarity----without the harshness of a tweeter. Frankly more like how a guitar speaker handles the distortion of the electric guitar.
A player like Doug Johns, who I have a long relationship with, has said that the Bass Array handles all of his effect pedals and looping passages with more detail and authority than he's heard before from a cabinet.

Getting excited thinking about this upgrade.. It would be only too fitting after swapping out almost all of my other gear this year!
