Good source for timber

Hello,

I was wanting to know of a good source for lumber. All I'd be needing is just enough for a body shape, it'd just be a personal hobby/time waster. I just want to make sure the body wood would be dried properly/prepared. I was just looking for a good vendor that can supply a small amount.

I'm just gonna grab the hard points off of my warmoth bass. I'll just use a MicroScribe DLX at work to get the hole centers, neck pocket profile, and general bridge saddle placement. I'm getting better at reverse engineering, and I'd like to apply it to a hobby so I learn more.

You'll find that building basses can waste as much time as you can throw at it.

As for lumber, look in your yellow pages under "hardwood lumber". If you turn up empty, look under "lumber" and see if any of them carry hardwoods. For me, digging through stacks of wood for a real gem is part of the fun.

Selecting good wood for bass building can be tricky business. "Reading" a board is something that comes with experience, and it can make a big difference in the final product to have the right boards. Wood dealers that specialize in woods for the luthier can usually guarantee that you'll get good wood: quartersawn, straight grained wood for the fingerboard, quartersawn wood for the neck, all of it stable and dry. If you'd like to take some of the guesswork out of buying the lumber, then I'd recommend LMI (Luthier's Mercantile).

Try a search for exotic hardwoods.Gulab Gidwani is the man.He handles luthier woods, personally i think LMI is a little pricey.Also there is a plce in Oregon,can't remember the site but Marc Culbertson runs the musical inst. wood division.Very helpful individual. I'll try to find the sie if you want.Good Luck
