Double Bass Great PDBass Video on Charlie Haden

@pdbass really gets right to the heart of what special about Haden. The particular solo video he picked is just incredible. The 5 examples he picks are solid as well. The Hampton Hawes duo is a good call. Anything with Hampton Hawes is great and this duo is no exception.

It has taken me some time to really get into Haden's work. I really love it now.
Some of my favorite work of his are all the albums with him & Denardo together (except Song X) The Empty Foxhole, Crisis & Ornette at 12 are very interesting albums. Denardo keeps him on his toes and he is less sentimental.
Oddly, another two favorites are those last duos with Jarrett! Great music and they go hard on the sentimentality.
The trios with Gismonti & Garbarek are special, also. HIs playing is more fleet than usual on those.

Agree that this is a really well done video. Kudos to Paul!

Haden has long been one of my main inspirations as a bassist. I think of him as a "primacy of the ear in the moment" sort of player. His motivic melodic playing is Jim Hall level stuff, only on the bass, and of course in his own personal voice. I hear everything from Bach to Country and everything in between in his playing, and it strikes me as some of the most honest and organic playing I have ever encountered.

Haden's extended solo on Metheny's "80/81" was one of the main motivators for me to want to play bass. Discovering it's possible to be that soulful in the low registers was a revelation. I've never been an upright player but I don't know if I would have even picked up bass guitar if it wasn't for him.

Call me old-fasioned, but the format of a video, when the player is squished for less than 1/4 of the screen and main part of the screen is a person reacting with facial expressions to a recording is not what I enjoy watching.

Well, the main video is available on its own. I think PD does a great job explaining Haden's appeal across various strains of jazz and other music.
Within free music Haden is far from the most interesting bassist - this video helped me see & hear beyond that.
The main video is here:

The breakdown of what Haden is doing in is very solid, IMO.
