Double Bass Headway into powered MAS Cabinet?

Does a Headway EDM1 have enough gain to work with a piezo pu and a powered MAS18?
Eric,

I’ve used a Headway EDB-2 and the Headway EDB-2 H.E. ( which was a complete redesign of of that box)
They will drive the powered MAS 1/8 (v1 & v2) I had the demo of the EDM-1 that Rick sent around a few years back.
At the time I don’t recall if I had my first MAS 1/8 yet. All I remember is that the EQ section of the EDM-1 didn’t get me
the tone quality I needed. By comparison the EDB-2 was more sophisticated. Just my take however. The Gain control on the EDM-1 goes from 0-20 dB while the EDB-2 goes from 0-32 dB That is a significant difference. By comparison my Grace Felix is 21-62 dB. On a loud gig with a Quintet or a 16 piece band the EDB-2 and MAS 1/8 combo will certainly work but the Grace MAS 1/8 combo doesn’t break a sweat. 😅 unless the drummer is overpowering.

Thanks, Ric. Sounds like the EDM may not be the best choice. I'll probably have a chance to try it at some point.

Yeah into a powered MAS18 my Redeye twin does not have enough juice to get loud even though the 18 is a 1200W internal amp. Dunno. I also note that with both my 18 and 16 (both powered) using them with a AIFocus sounds better then using the internal amp.

Nope, I bypass the P of the 18 altogether and just use the speaker (Mike allowed for this with an unpowered Speakon on the 18&16) I got to it because the 100w amp on the 16 went out (I think it is the jack actually but I dont know) and I plugged it in to the Focus just using the speaker and it sounded way better then with the 16amp and another preamp.

Mike only did that with my second MAS 1/8 (the second version with the higher power ice module. My lighter 500 watt MAS 1/8 (version 1 ) doesn’t have that ability even though it has the unpowered Speak On connector.

Wait you actually got in contact with Mike? I Miss the old days of new versions and new cabs and enthusiasms. Man I so wanted a reason to have that Canadian Amp be my next one even if I had to sell my car, but then Mike soured on the project and it disappeared. I remember seeing and hearing this early video (posted here by mike) of him playing thru a 45 or 46 and just wishing I could have a stage sound like that. All these years later (and 3 MAS cabs) I miss Mikes presence and enthusiasm and new designs (even if it annoyed me that the new one was always "so much better" then the one I had just bought...which it wasn't necessarily but different...my MAS46 2nd gen is my fav cab ever (sounds like a mini version of my stereo speakers: vintage JBLS with 2 15's three foot cast iron horns, and those massive bullet tweeters) even though the MAS18p is my main cab.
....I wonder if he repairs still at all, my 16p has a fault i'd like fixed.

Yeah it’s a real drag for sure. Apparently, Mike moved to Portland Oregon. Like you my powered MAS 4x5.5 is my favorite but it’s to big to schlep to most small jazz gigs. My powered MAS 1/8 v1 is much easier to transport. I’m selling my MAS 1/8 v2 soon as it’s a bit to heavy. I’m currently experimenting with a GR Bass AT Acoustic but until I get it out on a real gig I’m reserving judgement until it’s gig tested. It’s very clean, articulate and plenty loud. Its weight is around 22 lbs. We’ll see what develops.

After lots of experimenting, the Grace Felix preamp, has significantly more output into either of the powered MAS 1/8’s I have. The Headway EDB-2
isn’t quite as powerful. The gain on the Headway EDB-2 H.E. is 0-32 DB whereas the Gain on the Grace is 21-62 DB so essentially with the Grace volume control set some where between 2-3 your already close to the maximum output of the Headway. Just my take of course.
