Hearing my Bass

I had the same problem. Tried several different configurations - 2x12, 2x10, 1x15 cabs, and 1x8 and 1x10 combos. On the floor, angled up, and on a tall amp stand. The best was a 12" powered PA speaker used as a floor monitor. Then I went to wired in-ears. An inexpensive Rolls headphone amp, and inexpensive Shure monitors (still $100). You can adjust the bass and monitor mix individually to get exactly what you need. I don't mind the wire, it's thin headphone extension cable, I run it up with my bass cable, put it between my strap, and plug my monitors in. I'll never go back to floor monitors or cabs again.

Do they make a inexpensive wire less sending unit for in ears?

It all depends on what you think inexpensive is. My band has the Galaxy Audio AS-1100.. The two guitar players will use them but I will usually go wired. The quality is OK to good. But the quality of a wired connection is so much better I'll go wired most nights.. even with a wireless bass. I may try and upgrade to something else.. but probably not. It's not that big of a deal most of the time. I'd say the quickest way to test out if IEMs are for you is pick up a Rolls 351 and a pair of KZ ZS5 or ZS6 earbuds.

Take an aux/mon mix and add your mic and bass to taste... and you pretty much have a dedicated monitor mix for under $100. If you like it, then look at wireless, custom molded IEMs or other options.

Quickest and easiest way? Forget your favorite bedroom tone and do away with the scooped smiley face EQ. The only bassists I ever worked with who couldn't hear themselves (used to run sound too) had a scooped tone. That gets buried in a band mix AND a stage mix. Likely nobody in your audience is really hearing what you're playing either.

Start by running a brighter tone. Bump the low mids a little and leave everything else "flat". Your bass will JUMP out of whatever speakers you play through and your sound guy will love you for it too.

And it costs zero!

i have a WT330 212 cxc combo time travler enhance knob at 9 oclock

Thanks for the info. Here is what I suggest:
  • Bass knob - two or three clicks to the left.
  • Mid Knob - shift to 550hz, two or three clicks to the right
  • Treble knob - Straight up at noon.
  • Dynamic Boost switches - don't engage/turn these buttons
  • Enhance Knob - All the way to the left, don't use it yet.
  • Compressor - Hit the Bypass button
  • Don't use the Warm switch (Just yet)
  • Set the Gain according to the manual
  • Read the manual if you have not done so already: http://www.edenamps.com/assets/4012.053_cxc-combos-2005.pdf
Get the combo setup higher (on top of a speaker cab, stand, milk crate) make sure it hits your ears.

Do all of that, then try it. If that does not work, try cranking the mids even more. However, 200 watts at 8 ohms or 330 watts at 4 ohms is not a lot of power to work with. I don't know how great that cabinet is, but I feel it should do the job as a monitor.

OF course, we're mostly just shooting in the dark here. A lot depends on what the REST of the band is doing. If you have three guitarists who all think they're Yngvie Malmsteen with Marshall stacks cranked to 11, the problem is probably not your EQ. I have never used a super-powered amp stack, and I have very rarely had a problem hearing myself in rock bands, but I've been lucky enough to play in bands with guitarists (and drummers) who have realistic awareness of volume.
