Hello everyone. New/learning bass player here.

I had a bass as a teenager in the 80s and played in a couple of garage bands. Notice I said "I had" a bass, not that I played bass. I was terrible, didn't practice and didn't really learn anything. I remember vividly getting my fragile ego was hurt when I was trying to jam with someone and said "I thought you said you played bass". That was 1989 and I haven't picked up a bass again until about 4 months ago. Well I'm a different person now, I know I'll never be a "rock star". I'm just having fun.
I'm playing, actually learning and just having fun. Just knowing the names of the strings is more than I knew 30 years ago. Another reason I want to play is to keep my mind sharp and learning. Too much Alzheimer's in my family. I'm 46 and want to stay sharp.
I bought a used Peavey Fury just to see if I wanted to "play" again and learn. I did. My new Squier PJ arrived yesterday, $182 on Amazon. After another year or so of playing I will figure I owe myself a Fender Precession. Steve Harris has always been my musical hero.
I'm into (80s) metal, blues, jazz. Almost anything with a funky ass bassline.

Welcome to TalkBass!!!!

The only difference in you and me was I had a big brother who had my back. When someone picked on my playing early on he threatened to kill them. :D

We’re the same age. I started playing in the mid 80s in high school.

Welcome back to bass!!!!

We love gear pics around here. (Collectively we’re not gear snobs so don’t worry about that.) Post one of your new bass when you can. You get an amp yet?

The used Peavey bass came with a small Peavey amp.

You're lucky to have an older brother to stick up for you. "Art" wasn't really encouraged in my house unfortunately, so I was on my own.

Welcome to TB! Yes, the Squire PJ is a good bass. What are you using for an amp?
This is a great place to learn a lot about bass and to find references for anything you want from what pickguard color you should have to where to get online lessons.
But, I do have to warn you. Spending time on TB causes GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). You will end up owning more basses, amps, and bass paraphernalia then you ever thought you might.
