I happen to have a Marshall DSL 40 combo sitting around and want to experiment running it along side my super bassman rig vs using a dirt pedal.

It might sound terrible haha but I want to try and don't want to blow the 60w speaker that's in there now.

You'll need to get the box specs such as port size, LF, HxWxD and find a speaker whose TM specs match.
IOW - you can't just put any old 12" speaker in there and have it work properly.

Not something I would recommend. With the stock Celestion, you may get "dirt" ... specifically, the sound of a speaker being destroyed. Followed by silence.

With a replacement/substitute speaker, you would need to pick one which is rated to handle at least 100 watts and is designed for bass. Even then, an open-back cabinet provides no resistance to the speaker-cone movement, so the cone may be driven to exceed its designed excursion limit, resulting in expensive silence.

Furthermore, the sound waves from the back (or front) of the speaker will be out of phase with those of your main bass amp, tending to cancel low frequencies.

keep the bass knob on the amp backed off and you'll be fine. stick it right up on top of the bass rig, you'll probably find that you only need to bring it in a little to blend in with the regular bass sound.

could be cool.

I have an older version of that combo (DSL401) and the stock speaker is just kind of a cheapie. I recently added an eminence Swamp Thang in an avatar 112 sealed cab as an extension, and it sounds great. Swamp thang has a big bottom high power handling, stays clean way up, and is very efficient. I also picked up used Eminence Tonker that is going in the combo one of these days, which is more mid heavy, but similar in terms of efficiency. I agree with the others though, you probably want some sort of hi pass on the signal going to the guitar combo
