Could anyone help me with removing the cap to get to the gears? I am trying to take this tuning peg apart. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

That round disc you see is a small aluminum cup which is lightly pressed, face down, into the cast aluminum housing. It's held in there by friction.

To take apart this type of tuner you first remove the small screw in the end of the knob. Pull the knob and the plastic friction washers off of the end of the key shaft. Push the key shaft out the right side of the housing. The worm and all will go with it.

Then, set the housing with the post up on something that has a hole in it about the size of the little disc. Lightly tap or press the post shaft straight down, and it will push the little disc out the back of the housing. It's not in there very tight. Then you can pull the whole main gear and post out the back of the housing.

Reassembling is the reverse. Use a block of plastic or wood to tap the disc back into the housing. Try not to scratch it all up; it's soft polished aluminum.

Once you have it apart, what do you plan to do? You can clean it, re-grease it and put it back together. I don't think you can buy any replacement parts.

I am thinking about buying a set of tuners that I saw on ebay that have plastic buttons (like the Hofner's) - so I plan to swap the guts from the tuners and put bass tuners with plastic buttons on my Rogue Violin bass. I am trying to avoid modifying the headstock if possible.

Okay. I doubt that you are going to be able to swap the guts from one model tuner into the housing of another. Not without some machining.

You might be able to swap the plastic buttons from tuner onto another, if they are the same overall type and brand. Maybe.

If you want some cool plastic buttons for your tuners, my suggestion is to make them from scratch. Cut the existing buttons down and use them as the core structure, which you know will attach to the key shaft. Glue up or cast some pretty plastic around the existing buttons and shape it however you like.

THANKS FOR RESPONDING Bruce. I'm guessing there has to be some standard size to bass tuners in general so I'm gonna to to take this set apart. I haven't bought the other ones yet as I'm pragmatic.
I tried the cheap approach and bought plastic guitar buttons on ebay (made in China), filed them out and that project DID NOT work. Maybe I didn't have the precise tools for the job but once I got the knobs on - I could only tune the strings to a point and then they wouldn't turn anymore. I'm guessing the plastic wasn't strong enough to turn the larger tuner gears. Oh well onto another approach - taking these Rogue tuners apart and see what's inside.
