Hi. I’m Mike. I’m 49, a technology and engineering teacher, and have been playing bass for 35 years off and on. I call myself of a beginner because I don’t read sheet music (I can, but not while playing) and I don’t play gigs (haven’t been in a band since I was twenty).

But, because I’ve been playing so long I can learn a song quickly by ear. Generally (unless it’s The Who or Rush) I can pick it up in two or three listens, especially the stuff I listen to (classic rock, metal, easy listening (like the Carpenters, Dionne Warwick, etc).

Sometimes I’ll look up the sheet music to a song if a riff confuses me (like Money from Pink Floyd).

Bassically I’m just a middle age family man working a regular job and playing bass for fun when I have time.

I joined to learn about a specific instrument I want to own (if it exists). I want a short scale headless bass. And I like to talk about bass playing and bass guitarists. I love hearing bass and playing bass.

Note: I don’t get offended when people say “nice guitar” even though it’s a bass. And that’s because only the singer and guitar players score girls after the gig, so they can call it a guitar or anything they want as far as I’m concerned. Haha

Finally, I’ve only played a couple gigs (in my teens and twenties. But at one of those gigs I met a teenage girl and, 30+ years later we’re still together and have two awesome daughters.

Ironically, I played guitar at that gig, not the bass.

Welcome, Mike!
Cool about meeting your wife on a gig and still being together. Good stuff.

One "classic" short scale headless bass is the Kramer Duke. You can pick them up used for not much scratch.

Given any thought to playing bass at the Praise service at your church. The entire family can be involved in this. Six to seven different songs each week. Different, perhaps not new, just have not been played in several Sundays, keeps things interesting. And - IMO - playing with other people sure beats playing at home alone.

Welcome.

Same here. Met wifey on a practice session back in 1988. Just a numbers guy by day and a bass and Mustang Melvin in my spare time. Wife now got into drums, and we now have a blast practicing with backing tracks at home. Would love to start playing again one of these days.
