Hipshot D tuner between two regular tuners?

I have a Atelier Z 5 string bass tuned B-G and I am considering installing a D tuner on the E string. I know that would be redundant since I have a D on the B string, but some Funk tunes have a low D, and the D on a tuned tuned down E sting sounds much better to my ears that the fretted D on the B string. I think I might give that a try. I have a tapered 125 B string on that bass but still it's not the same.
The tuners I have are the Hipshot HB 3 so the D tuner would be a BT3. Has anyone here tried to put a D-tuner in the middle between two other regular tuners? Would that work? or would the bottom plate overlap with the adjacent tuners?

That's funny, I never did a search because I thought that what I was trying to do was too weird to have evever been covered in a thread. Go figure!
After reading this I think I might leave the Atelier Z alone. I am probably better off bringing my other 5 string bass along which is tuned A to C and it has the two stage extender on the E string..
