Hofner Bass Tailpiece Rattle

I've been having some trouble with my Hofner 500/1 in that it has a very large rattle around the Tailpiece when the e string is played? I've taken it to get it setup but they said they couldn't locate the source of the rattle. You can't hear it through an amp but it is very loud when you play it acoustically. Any help is appreciated :)

Are you sure it’s the tailpiece? I had a rattle once that sounded like it was coming from the bridge but ended up being a loose nut on the machine head.
If you can get someone to play the bass to produce the rattle while you touch various parts to find the source.

'94 Gretsch G6119B.JPG Not a Hofner, but.. One of the many annoying noises/rattles I had coming out of this old Gretsch was the tailpiece. I cured it by putting a small piece of moleskin on the tailpiece, where it bends over the body. You can't see it; doesn't hurt the finish; and that particular rattle went away. But, I also had loose wires rattling around inside the thing; loose tuner bushings; all kinds of things. And, most of them never sounded like they were coming from the actual location of the problem, either. My advice would be to check everything - very carefully... Oh, and.. welcome to Talk Bass!

I'm pretty sure it's the Tailpiece since that's where the bulk of the noise is coming from. I just made a video on where you can hear the rattle

fwiw, we had a hoffy once with trussrod rattle -sounded just like that, which is why it got sent back.

pop the control plate off and peek at the wiring. that hoffy also had loose crap inside banging around. taking off the control plate gave us a way to dump it out.

you're just gonna have to check as much of it as possible. start small and eliminate those and move up to the next item.

Sounds to me like the E string is rattling off the fret board. Try setting your bridge so that the height of action of the E string is 3 mm at the 12th fret. The G string action should be at 2 mm at the 12th fret, as factory specifications. Obviously, your can raise them higher if you prefer.
By all means do as Samataz suggests, and get someone to touch all sorts of parts to try to isolate that is buzzing. I, too, had a loose gear in a tuner machine, and it took weeks to try to isolate it. I even had it to a guitar maker - neither of us could isolate the buzz. It sound like it was coming from the bridge because that's where the sound of the strings come from! Does it do the same thing when tilted this way or that?

My Club bass was doing the same thing and I cured it by wedging a sharp toothpick in the rear of the tailpiece where the metal pieces go in. It’s a cheesy fix, I know, but it worked. I had to push the toothpick into a couple of the gaps before I found the one that was rattling on certain notes.

If that's what it is, a little CA glue, epoxy, or even solder should fix it.

It's hard hunting down those annoying rattles. My CT Hofner has a very slight rattle that I can't find. It could be the way the ball seats. It could be the pickguard. It could be a string rattle behind the nut toward the tuning keys or the nut slots. Maybe wires inside the hollow body. Or the pickup mounts/screws, etc. I even have a stethoscope for engine diagnostics, but it doesn't help much on instruments because the sound travels all over the bass.

I was wrong: the rattle comes from… I don’t know where. Sure, when I put a bit of pressure on the tailpiece, it disappears as the string vibration isn’t completely transmitted to the body.

I’ve checked the control plate and the jack and it’s not coming from there neither.

Looks to be inside so it could be one of the blocks vibrating against the body.
