How do I get a replacement neck (fretted) for my MTD Kingston KZ 5?

So I bought a KZ 5-string fretless here on Talkbass a few years ago, and I'm just too damn lazy at this point to develop my fretless technique. So I'd like to buy a fretted neck for it but I don't know how to go about shopping for one - and getting the best price. Any advice? Thanks!

You could get that one fretted. It's already slotted, you just have to get the lines out :) I suspect if Dana B Goods will sell you a neck it will be expensive.

Coincidentally I watched Mike Tobias discuss this with a customer on an old Tobias bass. He said the bass in question had plastic fretlines (ABS?) and using MEK they could be dissolved out. I think yours are wood but you may find a solvent solution. Steam and heat perhaps depending on the glue used.

Contact Dana B Goods, the MTD distributor Contact Dana B. Goods

Thanks! I just shot them an email. I'll let you know what I find out.

What's does this cost, ballpark?

None of it would be cheap. It would be the cost of a refret but instead of pulling the old frets the slots need to be cleared and cleaned up. There are so many ways to clear the slots the price will be based on that choice. On a miter box style of fret slotter this could be relatively simple.

Replacing the fingerboard or building a custom neck from scratch has also been done. If it was mine I'd be trying to clear and/or recut the fret slots and keep the neck I know fits and works. You can even shim the old nut and reuse that.
