how do i get the rickenbacker sound for less $

hey, i was playing a rickenbacker 4003 today. i had the guitar cable plugged into the top output with the treble tone off (modern mode).

i had my gretsch g5123b with me, and it sounded similar. the rick had more tremble and a rounder/defined lowend. tv jones makes a pickup that suppose to sound like a rickbacker, should i pick one up? i'm using nickle strings, too.

are their any affordable basses that can get the sound i'm looking for?

Also, which Rick tone do you want? Leaving aside models other than the 4001/4003 lines, there's still a huge amount of tonal variety in Ricks. It seems that people usually use "the Rick sound" to describe what they've heard on Yes or Rush songs, but that's just one end of a sonic spectrum that also encompasses Sir Paul and many others.

pauls sound would be cool.

Just get a couple of Ric pickups. That's like 99% of the sound right there.

Guy in the video describes the pickup cover as "a resonating bar to increase sustain" .....:rollno::laugh:
