How much power do I need for two 800W cabs (8 ohms each)

Finally found my second cab, and decided its time to upgrade the amp.

Running two 800W 8ohm cabs, so could be using 1, or both

Thanks in advance!

800 watts "RMS", "continuous", "program" or "peak"?

The answer is "it depends"

Asking how much you need implies that too few watts could hurt your cabs. It doesn't work that way.

So there's no minimum.

On the other end of things, any amp can be turned down to a level that won't damage your speakers.

So there's no maximum. If you know what to listen for.

The question is: How loud do you need to be?

Nobody can answer that but you.

In practical terms, you'd probably be wasting money if you bought an amp that could put out more than 2000W @ 4ohms.

right, you might only "need" ten watts to play it at home, or 30 watts to play it at a coffeehouse.

those numbers just tell you the maximum, not the minimum.

2watts will make sound.
2000 watts will make sound.

it really depends on the cabs and the amp and what you want to do. Two cabs that HANDLE 800 watts at 4 ohms total can be driven just fine by a 500 watt 4 ohm head like a Ag Tonehammer 500, but you can get louded (if that's what you really want) with bigger head.

If your 8 ohm cabs are rated at 800 Watts RMS each then you could use a 1600 watt RMS amp @ 4 ohms into both at the same time safely. Each cab would get 800 watts if the output from the amp is wired parallel as 99.9999% are.
If he put 800 watts into an 800-watt cab for any length of time, he'd be looking for a new cab shortly thereafter.

The only reason I could see for dumping a 750x would be size and weight. That is a good amp. A cheap Lil rumble 500 head would drive them just fine, and that bassman 800 looks very interesting. I'm sure one of the higher power micros would be fine, 800-1000w is all you would need at the top end, 500-600 would suffice as well.

Personally, I would stick with the swr if it is not giving you any issues.
