Hi TB! I am about to add an HX Stomp to my rig and I’m curious about how I should best run it into my GK combo amp. This Amp does not seem to have an effects loop or any input other than the guitar in. I am trying to determine the best route so that I can get the best representation of the effects and amp simulators that the helix offers. I am very new to this, so I’m hopeful that I can run it into this amp without needing much else to make it happen. At this point, I am just trying to achieve a handful of usable, go to tones that I can run through this amp in live band settings as well as into a DAW for recording.
Thank you for any advice!!

The amp will color your output from the HX Stomp if it does not have an effects return to feed it through. Your best bet for accurate would be to use headphones out of the stomp unless you plan on always playing through the combo amp when you are out.

If you plan to run the Stomp into the Amp for live use, you would generally not use amp and cab blocks in the Stomp. That said, if you use them and they sound good, you won't break anything. Amp and Cab blocks are generally used for send to FOH or into a DAW.

Headphones out into the amp ? Thanks for the quick response

No, headphones out to your headphones to hear accurately what the Stomp is sounding like. Going to your amp will sound different than in headphones or going to a DAW because the preamp of your combo will be coloring the tone coming out of the Stomp. Even with an effects loop, the cab of your combo will still color the output of the Stomp.

I gotcha. Sounds like I’ll just need to experiment with things! Super excited to tap into this for both bass and guitar :)

Can the Stomp go direct to FOH without a preamp?

Without an effects loop, you could go Bass > Stomp > Input on Amp, just watch your levels and understand that the Amp's front-end will color the tone.

You could also try Bass > stomp > headphone out > Aux-in on the GK. Again, watch your levels, but this would effectively by-pass the front end of your Amp.
Was wondering if that would work. Again thank you guys for the input this site is awesome!

with the HX Stomp you can split your chain such that you send your effects/etc directly to the amp on stage via one output, and the full chain with amp and cab blocks out the other output to FOH. It takes some programming and the split takes up a block on your chain, but it introduces quite a lot of flexibility that way.

Good info thank you

I bought the stomp just to use as... a stomp box lol. While some of the amp stuff sounds great, I don't really use them too often. However, using an amp/preamp as a drive pedal has worked well even going through my amps. I have a nice tubey drive patch that uses the SVT amp that goes into a 50/50 split 1x12 us deluxe and 8x10 svt cabs.

surprisingly, my fav. drive though is the Retro Reel patch that gives a really nice saturated old school tubey warm drive. love it

So... With your setting, I could use it two ways:
  • If I want a amp+cab sim to FoH:
    • Create a amp+cab block on the end of the FX chain and then use the output of the Stomp to send to FoH, either using a DI or using a trs to XLR cable.
    • Then create a send left loop before the amp+cab and use the loop output to connect to the amp.
  • If I want to use the line out of the amp (or a microphone), I would connect the HX directly to the amp input through the regular output and wouldn't use any amp or cab sim.

Great thanks that’s very helpful :D

Definitely excited to mess around with it. Will also be fun to have access to sounds I would of never considered purchasing in a standalone stomp box
