The one-mic setup has been working great for our band!

if you know me on here, I always chime in and explain the complications involved in pulling this off. I always want to do it but we couldn’t make it work.

fast forward to the last 4 gigs. They were all outdoor and our mandolin player is out for having a baby. So the fiddle player, banjo player and guitar all form a semi circle around the mic (Audio Technica 4033) and I run my bass through my black box/Alix DI.

the sound has been great. I’m lucky that I play with some great players who know how to pull off the “choreography” to make sure the lead vocals or soloist are front and center. We even played a private party and our friends in another band who played banjo and mandolin sat in on a super jam and it still worked. crazy part about the last show was that we were in a pavilion that was packed with loud drunks. Still no feedback. We have a board that can record our shows and the mix is impressive.

I am very excited that we have lots of outdoor shows and can run this setup for most of the remaining summer gigs.

What's the monitor situation? My trad bluegrass band has just started practicing around a single mic in anticipation of the band contest that uses that format. Normally, when we run our own sound, we have individual vocal mics and instruments with pickups, with two monitors spread across the front.

No monitors for these gigs. The last one got pretty loud and wished we had our in-ears.

We could hear each other very well without any monitors. That seems to be the biggest issue with the one mic set up. Floor monitors seem to add too much causing feedback
