In a local pawn shop that has piles of vintage or neglected instruments I stumbled across this bad boy.

it’s a 1987 made in Japan Charvel 3b, and I’m blown away by how good it sounds.

first of all I’m not sure what pickup the previous owner has installed but it sounds like a polar opposite compared to the Jackson pickup in the bridge, I’ve ordered an original Jackson P from the same year which (by chance) I found on eBay!

I can’t believe I’m saying this but it comes close to the Spector euro I have in terms of quality, it feels solid and packs serious punch!

Anyone else here had experience with these?

Bought it as something of a project I could make money on but I may keep it!

The Charvel stuff from that era tends to be really well made (guitars and basses). Looks like someone swapped the P pickup, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If there is a weak spot its some of the pickups used (that obviously varies model to model). Nice find, if it speaks to you then rock it! :cool:

yeah I have read here that the pickups can be weaker and some can be stronger in ohms. The pickup I’ve found is 11ohms so should be fine! I am torn between which sound I like as the bridge pickup is more fat sounding whereas the P has more of a passive growl to it and I leave the P soloed more than I do the bridge or both together. Part of the reason I’m buying is so I know what the instrument sounds like stock then I can look into installing my own preference
