I never heard a Hofner sound this funky!

Was gonna say you must not of heard of Chris wood then but someone beat me to it. Medeski Martin and wood is peak music for me. Great funky hofner tone.

Also I play a hofner and I’m funky as hell!
I saw him with Martin, Medeski, and Wood back in 1996. I think he played a Fender a bit, but the thump he got out of that acoustic was awesome!

The Contemporary series is made in China and the quality of my example in this line, a 500/7 Verythin, is excellent overall. The Contemporary series are not fully hollow body however, with a center block.

The Contemporary is a bit different than the standard 500/1 violin bass. Unlike the original, the Contemporary model is a semi-hollow rather than a full hollowbody. So it has a different sound and feel compared to the original and the entry priced Ignition models.

The Contemporary basses are made in Hoefner's proprietary factory in China, presumably in Beijing. I think they're purposefully modified (semi-hollow) or the German models won't sell!

Hofner basses are far more versatile than many people think.
I definitely agree. A ‘65 Hofner 500/1 was my first bass back in 1966. At that time, and later on, the band I was in played everything including The Beatles (obviously), Stones, Beach Boys, The Who, Blues Project, The Doors and anything else that was popular at the time. The Hofner more than held its own.
Wish I still had that one. Wish I could buy one now for what I paid for it. $235 with case from Manny’s Music, NYC.
