…polar opposites, but I enjoyed both of them… and can’t really justify either.
The first was a 5-String Sire P8, natural with maple board and block inlays. It really played beautifully. I am terrible at playing 5’s but it was a blast to play. It was acoustically really resonant even unplugged. The fret ends were not remotely noticeable… just perfectly flush with the fingerboard. There were a lot of controls which was a little confusing, but no biggie.
I have thought about buying another beater bass to take to gigs. I would have to get used to playing a 5 but it would give me two justifications to buy it… to own a 5, and have a gigging bass that isn’t worth $3k. But I do already have a beater precision I can gig in a pinch… so technically no justification.
Then there was the second bass, an Ibanez SRF700 fretless. I have no justification or use for a fretless. I mean, maybe, I could play 3 or 4 songs in my band with a fretless that wouldn’t sound out of place. But wow, what a fun bass to play. Most comfortable neck I have ever played on a fretless.
Well, if I stumble on a bunch of cash, maybe I’ll buy a 5er and a Fretless. Right now I’m saving for my next Spector.
