Hi my name is Devon Boland and i am a jazz bassist. I have been playing for 4 years and am serious about purchasing an Upright Bass. However i am left handed and that raises enough problems as it is. Other than learning right handed I was wondering if i do purchase an upright what would have to be done to be able to flip the strings and be able to play. I know the bridge and nut will need to be flipped, but my main concern is the tuning pegs. I don't know much about uprights but will the tuning pegs be able to maintain the strings once they are flipped?
-Thank You.

Hello Devon,
There are some wonderful left handed jazz bassists including Jennifer Leitham and Lyles West. Lyles plays with the strings set up for right hand and Jennifer has them flipped for left hand. I would suggest you talk to a luthier about buying a bass set up the way you want. Upton Bass is building some marvelous basses at reasonable prices. Talk to them about building you a bass. They can be reached at www.uptonbass.com
You can learn more about Jennifer and probably contact her about her experiences with basses through her website : www.jenniferleitham.com
Here is a nice video of Lyles with guitarist Jason Bucklin:
