Hello the community,

A friend of mine has this bass in his closet and would like to sell it.

The bass appears to have a defective preamp (battery dying quickly). It has dents, but the neck seems straight and the truss rod working.

So, several questions:

- can someone identify the model? We are unsure whether it is a SDGR SR405, SR705 or another model? The serial number seems to indicate that it has been produced in July 2001 at Fujigen Gakki,

- In case the preamp is fried, would it be worth trying to fix/replace it or to simply turns the bass into a passive instrument?

- we are planning to bring the bass to a luthier to have it cleaned, set up, missing/replacing knobs/screws added, preamp fixed (or removed for selling it as a passive instrument) and a new set of strings put on. Is it worth the shot?

- How much do you think such a bass could sell once fixed and cleaned?

Any advice or comment is welcome. Thanks!

Best wishes for 2020!

I can't help with the model.

The preamp isn't fried of it wouldn't work at all. You either have operator error or a voltage leak somewhere. Operator error could include leaving the bass plugged in when not in use, that will drain the battery. A voltage leak could be the output jack being turned in a manner that allows the ring terminal to contact something that is grounded; again that would drain the battery. I'm not a fan of active basses so it's ALWAYS worthwhile to change an active to a passive bass.

I wouldn't take it to have that work done. 1) Once sold the new owner may want to change strings, necessitating a new setup. 2) The setup you pay for probably won't be to another's (or even your) liking causing another setup to be done. You can clean it and do a setup will minimal tools and time invested, there are plenty of threads and even links here to guide you through the process. Strings again, no it is very likely that whatever string you put on it won't be kept. Just leave the strings you have there and let the new owner select whatever they prefer.

For help in valuation, you need to be a supporting member. Check Reverb, Guitar Center, pawn shops, and others for an idea of the value.
