i'm lost

There have been dozens of threads about why the change was necessary and how to navigate it. You can try reading some of those. The main point is that TB runs on software from an outside vendor, the old software was obsolete and could no longer be protected against security breaches and such, and will be losing its functionality.

Ads are an issue periodically. TB is a business and ads are one of its revenue sources; they help to keep supporting membership costs down and let the forum be available at all to non-paying members. One of the benefits of supporting membership is that it reduces the ads you're exposed to, but periodically when there's a change in the software things get glitchy and people get ads they shouldn't. This...
I'm afraid in the effort to bring on younger people, they are going to lose this older one.
It has nothing to do with bringing in a younger crowd. They had to update to the newest software for security purposes. The old version of Xenforo was no longer being patched, which means there were no more security updates to counter the ever evolving Internet threats. It's like wearing a suit of medieval armor on a modern battlefield because you're not a fan of plate carriers. It is what it is, and it's absolutely necessary, so just learn to love it.

I have been here only a year, and am in my late 50's. You could say I just got relatively used to the old system, and boom, here I am learning all over again.
But I really don't find it that terribly difficult.
Best thing I did to help keep oriented was to click off the "Hot 10+" heading and stick with the 2nd column, labeled "Threads". The sheer volume of posts at this site make the new "hot 10" and "latest activity" headings come across as very disorganized and overwhelming.
That's my advice for trying to generate a little bit of the familiarity of the old site. I think once you get into the groove of setting things to your taste, you'll find yourself navigating without excessive clicking, but it may take a few visits over a few days for it all to fall into place.
Hope that helps a little.

I've been here over 10 years. since the change I'm just about unable to do ANYTHING on the site. SO MANY ADDS popping up every few seconds!!!!

It is interesting to note: I hear many saying there's a huge uptick in ads. That would hack me off pretty good too, but honestly, I'm not getting any more than was happening previously.

I will say, I had a Perdue Chicken add that damn near knocked me off my chair, as it flashed on the screen, drew a bright blue border around what I was reading, then settled to the lower section of the screen. But that was before the site update, maybe 10 days ago, and I haven't experienced anything similar to that, yet.....

So, the question is, are some of us getting slammed harder than others? Is it a browser setting?
I wish I could tell you how I'm maintaining the old, "normal" level of ads, but I don't know what's making the difference. I've not paid any money, yet I hear contributors upset about how they were not supposed to, but now DO see ad's after the update. Again, I'd be pretty hacked off about it too.

Final thought: Let's start referring to this change as an up DATE, as those who are upset seem to be calling it an up GRADE, and getting all the more agitated over this mis-labeling of the change.
An upGRADE means we were sold on improvements. It was an upDATE or degrade into oblivion situation, as it's being explained repeatedly over the last week.
Terminology can make all the difference in how we process change.

anyone know why we can't browse the classifieds by group anymore? Is there a way to just browse basses for sale for example instead of everything recently listed? I understand the reason to switch to a new platform, but this is not an improvement regardless of the reasoning.

This has happened before, it's part of the process, and Paul works it out with the vendors until all the permissions and blockers get settings so the site works as intended.

As far as finding the forum of your choice, so far for me, the most useful thing has been the "Forums" tab at the top of my screen and particularly the drop menu you get when you click the arrow next to it. In Firefox and Chrome, at least, that's giving me this, which, you'll notice, let's me access all the new posts, or pick a particular forum from a list, or do searches or check my watch list, etc.:

Having said that, there are still parts of the transition ongoing, especially in the classifieds, and personally I'm not seeing "hot deals" available right now. I suspect it will come back once everything is complete.

All my Bookmarks I used before work perfectly, still the easiest way to get around.
Yes, this and a surprising number of other things still work better than I would have expected.

I work in a web design agency, and I can tell you by experience that keeping all the previous content compatible with the new platform may have requested very important efforts from Talkbass developers, or the Xenforo team, or both. Kudos to all, and thank you so much!

I still have little things to figure out, but it's almost nothing.

It could be a good idea to provide a small memo of equivalents: column A "I used to find this like that", column B "now the equivalent is called YY under the ZZ menu"… Maybe next time?

I just click on the stuff I want to read. This isn't that hard.

Different? Sure. But everything changes, and I'm sure TB had very legitimate reasons for the change (I shudder to think how many updates or outright new software I've gone through on day jobs), and I'm adjusting to it just fine, and believe me, I'm as challenged by computers and software more than a lot of people ( I am a charter member of the 'Old Folks vs. Tech' club).

My NBD is No Big Deal. With age, I've learned to get really upset only if the situation requires it. This is nothing.

everything changes
Hey, I even changed my avatar in solidarity with the TB changes! After 20+ years! At first I was worried that people would be confused, angry, and demand that I "change it back". But no, everyone seems to have adapted pretty quick to the new avatar. In fact, nobody has even mentioned it. Kinda makes me wonder if anyone's paying attention.
