Introduction to Double Bass

Hi Patrick. I've been playing bass guitar for over 25 years but would finally like to give the double bass a shot, I've played a lot of fretless bass guitars over the years so Im HOPING i can learn the basics without too much difficulty. I don't have tons of space where I live right now and was considering an electric upright to learn. in your opinion is this a suitable 'easing-in' for a beginner, or should I bite the bullet and buy a 3/4 acoustic. I'm nervous about buying something as complex as an acoustic bass.

Hi Quilbert! You bethinx a double bass is "complex?!" It's just a box with strings on it! Okay, it's more than a box to me too....
I say, check out all the uprights you can find in your area. Play them ALL. If one "grabs' you by the heart, BUY IT! If it is too complex a problem, or too expensive. Wait a while until the desire in you becomes too great to suppress -- then BUY (or rent?) and PLAY and play and play an....

I think it is a very personal thing and depends what you would like to do with the bass.
A little bit more than one year ago, I was standing at the same point.
Due that I'm living in a block house and have only a small room for the music, I decidet to buy en Electric Upright (NS Design)
It is really ok to play on it, but it is not the same feeling as an acoustic one.
4 Months later I selled the NS Desing and bought an acoustic :)

Yes, it is louder and it makes (a lot) more noise.

Perphaps you should start by renting an instrument.
I bought mine for 1000Euro, because I believe that it is cheaper this way, than to rent an instrument.
