Is it bad to leave the mutes up all the time on a Rickenbacker 4003s?

Is it ok to leave the mutes up on a rickenbacker 4003s? will leaving them up all the time cause any damage?

I wouldn't. Leaving the mutes up while playing will kill your sustain and cut higher frequencies.

Thats the sound im going for, im using flatwounds too. Im trying to get that upright thump and beatles sound. I just dont want to mess the bass up by leaving them up 24/7

Nope I leave them on for a day or two sometimes, depends on how I want it to sound when I pick it up. I also have flatwounds on mine, a lot of people don't realize how versatile these things really are. Chris Brubeck plays his fretless Ric and sometimes it's indistinguishable from an upright. The rubber pads last years too. If you're talking like years or something I wouldn't go that long, it could leave permanent indentations but I've never heard of it happening. McCartney used his almost all the time.

Yeah, he's a monster. There was an old live video from maybe 2008 on YouTube and you couldn't not believe it wasn't an upright, it was amazing.

You can control the decay rate with how big you roll them, that's what I like. I'll even use one with the Ric once in a while.
