Thats the sound im going for, im using flatwounds too. Im trying to get that upright thump and beatles sound. I just dont want to mess the bass up by leaving them up 24/7I wouldn't. Leaving the mutes up while playing will kill your sustain and cut higher frequencies.
Just for that deep thump like a upright i guessFlatwounds I get, but upright? From a 4003?
Nice! thanks for the help and i am deffinatly going for that Mccartney soundNope I leave them on for a day or two sometimes, depends on how I want it to sound when I pick it up. I also have flatwounds on mine, a lot of people don't realize how versatile these things really are. Chris Brubeck plays his fretless Ric and sometimes it's indistinguishable from an upright. They rubber pads years too. If you're talking like years or something I wouldn't go that long, it could leave permanent indentations but I've never heard of it happening. McCartney used his almost all the time.
That muted sound is just the best!Mutes always on.
eggcrate foam on every bass I own.
Chris Brubek has some of the best Fretless Rick work I’ve ever heard.
Sweet! we are always in search of that thump!

I never tried that or knew that, i will try that tomorrow!!You can control the decay rate with how big you roll them, that's what I like. I'll even use one with the Ric once in a while.
