Is there a way to make a decent BG audio clip with zero recording gear?

Um, OK, let me rephrase: using the phone and/or computer I already have without leaving the house:)

Use your computer or phone to order one online. It delivers to your doorstep, and voila, good recordings and you never had to leave the house.

Smarminess aside, we probably can't offer too much help without knowing what kind of computer (Mac or PC), or what kind of phone, or what kind of lens kit with mic you were talking about, or what your final intentions are. Are you trying to just get something to record ideas, or are you trying to compose music?

I was trying to get a simple demo clip of a pedal mod I did. I got distortion/clipping even with my practice amp turned down and the mic placed several feet away. I have used this mic for general video/interviews with great success.

Can't get anything usable with my phone even with the auxiliary mic that came with my lens kit. It does great for what I bought it for (which isn't recording bass guitar demo's).

How the heck are you going to record anything with zero recording gear?

Anyway....a while back there is a member here who posted a video and soundclip of himself playing bass. It was quite good.

I forget what kind of phone he had....but you can get this plug-in stereo mic for it that produces pretty good sound.

I've got one. I have a friend who records bits of my bands gigs on her phone and the sound quality is impressive. Great bass. I just couldn't make it happen in my living room. Of course, I'm impatient.

Which phone are you using? I've heard good phone recordings and terrible ones. Word is iPhones have a built in compressor that can really muck up the sound, but it can be turned off. The design intent is for it to level out the volume as users move the phone to/from their mouth, not recording good audio. I'd imagine Android phones could have the same.

If you've got an iPhone, check this app my friend just helped develop.
Daisychain Music Recorder by Daisychain Recorder LLC
It's not available on other devices, (there were issues trying to develop the platform for the various coding and hardware differences in the Android world, and they are just getting off the ground).
I've heard some recordings from it and they've been quite good. Plus, if you've got other band mates with iPhones, you can network up to four phones and sync the recordings like a four-track recorder (the real selling point of the app). There are some basic built in editing tools available. You won't cut a finished mix, but you'll have a good scratch pad for getting ideas down.
