Is There A Way To Make Your Own Bridge Cheaply Without Many Tools?

Hi. I have a bass I defretted and the current bridge is failing me. The strings are way too high above the board. Is there anything that can be done? I do not have much money or tools. It's an Epiphone EB-0. Thanks!

Take it to a competent professional luthier and get your bass evaluated as to what actually needs to be done and how much money it will cost to make it playable again. This shouldn't cost you much just for a look-see and estimate. It's far better than you just tinkering away with few tools and just as few skills.

Here are the photos. The last one is right near the nut.

Yep you want very slight relief. Also check the string hight at the nut.

^^THIS^^ You might need to re-shim the neck, but personally? I would check this first. Your nut was set up to clear the frets - and you don't have any now. Dollar to a donut it's too high. Getting the nut right will affect how thick a shim you might need, too.

It looks to me like there is also a gap between the top of the pocket and the neck; that isn't helping any. @Reedt2000 tell him about screw holes while your're at it. The relief is probably okay, if it was before, the action has been raised by the fret removal. The nut will definitely need adjustment.

By screw holes I assume you mean that the screws which hold the neck to the body must pass cleanly through the body and only bite into the wood of the neck

The nut needs to be adjusted so you have around 0.010~0.015" of clearance to the bottom of the string. When filing you want a round bottom, not a 'V'. If you file it to a 'V' the string won't rest in the bottom, the string will tend to bind, and tuning will wear the nut much faster.

Since you defretted it, did you file the nut slots down afterwards? That would make a big difference.
I didn't do that. To be honest, the nut keeps falling out no matter how many times I glue it. I even had a professional put it in when I was going to have them put in the pickup, but it didn't stay. I will try filing it, though! Thanks for the advice ^_^

Usually just a drop or two of yellow glue will hold a nut in place. Whatever you do don't glue a nut in permanently with gorrila glue or any other heavy duty adhesive. They need to be removable.
