J Bass mod to sound like Travis Carlton's Sadowsky

I have a stock J Bass and I've noticed that many replace the pu's on these basses. I wanted to consider doing this. I like the sound Travis gets, fat but with enough definition that you can easily hear the pitch. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just use an active preamp pedal. Sadowksy makes one. That and have good pickups. What exact bass is it?

Thanks for the reply. It's a 2004 Fender American Jazz Bass. It has an S1 switch. The back pickup is not working so I'm going to take it to a repair guy. So, I thought this might be a good time to consider a pu and/or electronics change.
