Double Bass Jason Sypher

Got to meet and hear Jason this past Friday. What a nice person and a great player as you know. Rhiannon and the band were playing at a local performing theatre. I already had tickets for another event in Memphis - Trevor Noah's live tour that same night. Anyway, I managed to get over to the theatre where Jason was to play about an hour before their sound check. I meet Jason and he took me on stage to show me his setup. Showed me how he's blending a Krivo pickup (which he thought he would never buy) with a copper Realist to get a bit more volume without feedback. Next he pulled out his American Standard - asked me what I was "working on" - and began to give me an impromptu lesson including his percussive style tricks and his approach to arco when playing fiddle tunes. Amazing!!!

Trevor Noah's show was incredibly funny and savy. (Be sure to catch his show if you can.)

I was able to make the 25 mile dash from theatre-to-theatre to catch Rhiannon's last 3 tunes in an encore. As expected, the band sounded great, and Jason's bass couldn't have sounded better.

BTW, Jason was looking for some flatwound strings for a Jazz bass he had recently bought - he plays it on a couple of tunes on the tour. I found an old set of Chromes in the string drawer and brought them with me for the theatre-to-theatre dash. Never know when someone might need an old set of flatwounds.
