Right now for cover design is more important than ever - a great cover may not make or break someone hearing the album, however it is often the difference between the listener buying a CD/tape/LP or DL.
That is an album of sound poetry by the founder of the Dada movement Hugo Ball from 1916! The cover is from the Texas art duo The Art Guys, who are related to the Fluxus movement which wasealso called neo-Dada.
Sometimes the cover needs make sense more than it needs to be elegant - of course the design around the drawing is very nice, and the drawing itself has it's own charm!
That album is on it's third pressing, so it worked out!
This one we had to go for it even more - this trio played in the gallery of a very famous homo-erotic artist Delmas Howe and we were all three struck by the power of this painting and had to ask for for the cover:
My "ideal" is more like this, with a Cy Twombly sculpture on the cover, but sometimes other forces are at work!
