jazz band tryout???

i joined the jazz band for my upcoming school year and they said that i would need to play infront of the instructor to get an idea of placement. my question is: what should i play? are they gonna have something there for me? or am i just gonna play what i want to play? also,i dont want to be discracefull, but who was Jaco? i've heard about him a lot on this board. are there any websites that i can learn about him on? thanx for all answers.

Approach the instructor and ask him/her what you are expected to play at the audition. He/she will either hand you some sheet music or tell you what to bring.

When I was in high school I was told that I would have to play five tunes, all different styles, e.g. rock, blues, swing, latin, etc.
Also, I had to supply the sheet music myself.
Not all instructors work this way, though. Chances are they will provide you with music.

Who was Jaco? The only thing that I can say is you'll have to discover that for yourself.
Go and purchase his first solo album entitled " Jaco Pastorius ". You'll find it in the Jazz section. Give this a serious listening to and you'll have your answer my friend!!

Anyway, good luck with the audition!! And remember the most important rule: RELAX!

Far out,man.

I might humbly advise that you worry more about the basics than pyrotechnics. I remember trying out for jazz band in high school against this guy who played outrageous stuff on every tune. I wasn't nearly as flashy, and just tried to play what the instructor wanted me to, and I got the nod. The instructor said that he didn't want another soloist or he would have asked for a tenor sax player. He wanted a BASS player, who would hold down the bottom end and keep swinging.

Best of luck!

hey, i'm trying out for it too. but i bet you a ton that mine is harder to get into. Mine's the Berkeley High Jazz band. I dont know if any of you have heard of them, but they won every single compitition they joined. and were very famous. so anyways, my guitar teacher is having me get charts from the school, and then learning them. ask the jazz instructor for some charts of what they play, so you can get an idea of what its like.
